The brief
A steeply sloping, rarely-used garden behind a period home, enclosed by mature brick walls that gave the plot real character but made the space feel more like a boundary than somewhere to spend time. The brief was to create a garden built for entertaining, without losing what made the walled plot special.
Our approach
We retained and repointed the original brick walls rather than replacing them, then cut two level limestone terraces into the slope, linked by broad stone steps. An oak pergola over the lower terrace gives shade and structure for outdoor dining, and layered planting along the walls softens the hard landscaping and settles the new terracing into its surroundings.
The result
A garden that's used properly rather than looked at from a window — evenings and weekends now happen outside. The original character of the walled plot is still very much present; it's just finally been given somewhere to sit.
