The brief
A compact, shaded courtyard attached to a newly built home. On paper it was outdoor space; in practice it felt like leftover space — overlooked, underused, and disconnected from the rooms around it.
Our approach
We kept the material palette deliberately restrained — large-format porcelain paving and dark timber screening to make the most of a small footprint — and used raised planters for structural, shade-tolerant planting that doesn't compete with the space. Integrated lighting extends the courtyard's use into the evening.
The result
What was once an overlooked side space now works as an outdoor room in its own right, used daily rather than walked past.
